These works blend together Le Grand’s interest in color, rhythm, dense patterning, and the strangeness of the human body. He loves a line that becomes a shadow that becomes a form that then merges and morphs into a pattern, receding and repeating and breaking the surface only to slowly sink back in on itself. And the body: he’s always surprised (and confused, repelled, allured) by it, by its goofy extremities and playful curves, its charming softness and surreal symmetry. The body here is fragmented and rendered as a playfully reduced form, something almost cartoonish, the clean lines and simplified forms reminiscent of a character from some forgotten Saturday morning cartoon. These parts and pieces are familiar but made strange.
